HOMA BAY EQUATOR INITIATIVES






















Homa Bay Equator Initiatives is a Youth community based organization operating in Lake Victoria region of Kenya (Africa).
Permaculture being a global initiative reflecting and enhancing the diversity cultures across the world, encouraging the youth and children to link globally and act locally that we are all citizens of the earth with responsibility for the creation of value within our locality.

Vision
to have a society where youth and children from all walks of life play their role in an enabling policy and development framework so as to engage in self sustaining socio economic activities with the focus of making the world a better place to live in.

Mission
to enhance effective participation of young people through facilitation, capacity building and role playing in social and economic development initiatives through strengthening and analysis of own generated ideas, proposals, experiences and resources.

Objectives
- to promote the millennium development goals through applications and interventions and interventions of permaculture principles and ethical values, namely, promotion of:
o Earth Care – enabling life systems to continue and thrive
o People Care – care of ourselves , others and of future generations to come AND
o Sharing of available resources to promote both Earth Care and People care initiatives to promote sustainable development through domestication of Local Agenda 21 initiatives


Current programs
- Agroforestry and soil conservation
- pre-school program – Early Childhood Development Education (ECD)
¨ provide basic needs to the OVC i.e education, food, drugs etc
¨ access Early Childhood education opportunity to the orphaned children nearly within the locality
- To provide also psychological support to include guidance, counseling and spiritual nourishment to the orphaned children.






- Dairy Goat project supporting People Living With HIV/AIDS






- HIV/AIDS programs : Awareness creation on HIV/AIDS and train Home Based Care givers and community counselors.
HIV/AIDS pandemic socio economic impacts are very serious i.e emergence of thousands of orphans, widows and the elderly left behind in this region after the demise of their beloved ones.
In order to respond both effectively and efficiently to the needs and aspirations of the orphans and vulnerable children, there is a strong need to establish a children center to cater for orphans and vulnerable children in Homa Bay on the Lake Victoria, a place with thousands of helpless orphans who need immediate and urgent support to alleviate them from predicaments and living in abject poverty.


- Orphan Support Program: the program provides livelihood and nutritional status to the affected and infected , specific interest is laid on reducing school drop outs amongst the youth. The project places special emphasis on girl children whose lives and welfare have been compromised heavily by stereotypes, African customs and discriminatory attitudes full of gender inequality which favors boys / men and are against girls / women.
Currently the project provides basic needs to the orphans and other vulnerable (OVC) in the project area of operation, namely:-
a. Educational needs:- Which urgently requires / needs story books, exercise books, school bags, school suppliers, such as pens, pencils, crayons, rubbers, mathematical sets, calculators, writing pads, posters and charts on numbers, Alphabets, Globes and First Aids Kits.

b. Clothing :- The children need clothes of various kinds and T-shirts, jackets and school uniforms etc
c. Medical Care (Drugs) :- Drugs of common children diseases as Malaria, Headache, stomach and ringworms etc. these are purchased locally in the Pharmacy / Chemist shops.
d. Food – Children Feeding Programme: - The project also undertakes school children feeding programme of providing breakfast and lunch to the children. Therefore, the project needs to purchase the following items:- Maize, beans, Millet, Sorghum, Cassava, Salt, Cooking fat, Meat, Fish etc, and also provide cooking pots, water containers, firewood for cooking, plates and mugs etc.

- sanitation and environmental management: the program targets the promotion and improvement on environmental status through waste management , and protection of water catchment areas
- community horticulture including organic farming along the shores of Lake Victoria applying simple irrigation techniques
- Environmental and ecological travels
- Cross cultural exchanges and home-stays
- Organize national, international youth camps , workshops, conferences etc where youths can meet , learn and exchange views on various world problems / topics i.e environmental restoration, peace, human rights, friendship, international courses, internships and apprenticeships in sustainable Agriculture , permaculture, organic farming etc
- Willing Workers on Organic Farms (wwoofing), an international exchange program
- Environmental clean up campaigns
- To provide links and contacts to travelers who want to make positive contribution, farming etc to the environment in the course of their travels.

Challenges
- high rate of HIV/AIDS transmission
- climate change making it difficult to go on with farming activities
- increasing number of orphaned children
- high number of desperate and needy secondary school girls who most of them are orphans and other vulnerable children who drop out of school due to lack of school fees.

SUPPORT NEEDED
The project will appreciate any financial and material support to implement its goals / objectives and activities / programs such as:-
- Setting up child sponsorship fund to support orphaned children primary / secondary education / or vocational training.
- Develop a Youth resource centre with computers to promote ICTs interventions for the youths to facilitate
- ICTs skills transfer and acquisition
- Creation of jobs / wealth for the youths
- Bridging the information gap and digital divide North / South
